Inspired by Bay Area figures, a rapper from the South who broke through as a teenager in 2017 with "Rubbin Off the Paint." YBN Nahmir, was among the teenaged rappers who made a commercial breakthrough in 2017. The Birmingham, Alabama native developed his exuberant and combative style -- one inspired by major Bay Area figures such as E-40 and Mozzy -- during online gaming parties. He formed the YBN crew, started uploading tracks to social media platforms, and gained traction with "Rubbin Off the Paint." After a digital distribution deal with Human Re Sources was worked out, the track hit the Billboard Hot 100 and peaked in December at number 46. At that point, the track's official video had reached over 60 million YouTube views, and a batch of follow-up singles was officially available.
